If you are travelling near Didsbury and Olds on June 5, be on the lookout for the Emergency Management Functional Exercise.
Shelley French, Head of Communications at Mountain View County, explained that there is a Mountain View Regional Emergency Management Agency that conducts these exercises every four years.
The agency includes the Town of Olds, the Town of Didsbury, the Town of Carstairs, the Town of Sundre, the Village of Cremona, and Mountain View County.
"This year, we received an Alberta Community Partnership Grant, and with those funds, we will be simulating a train derailment.
She shared that it will be taking place at the old grain elevator on Township Road 324.
"We're simulating the event, and throughout the day, we will be acting as though this occurred internally, and working our way through the process."
She shared that in the afternoon, they will be debriefing and seeing how things worked and what they could do better.
"If residents do see an uptick in emergency vehicles in that area, just know this is just a functional exercise; it is just for training purposes."
