Hundreds of motorcycles revved their engines down Portage Avenue Saturday morning to raise awareness and funds for prostate cancer research.

It was all part of the 17th annual Motorcycle Ride for Dad, an event that draws in hundreds of participants each year.

This year's ride started at Earls Polo Park and continued west on Portage Avenue to Assiniboia Downs, then on to Selkirk, Gimli and back for the wind-up event at Canad Inns Windsor Park.

Last year, a record-breaking $650,000 was raised. This year, organizers are hoping to surpass that.

All funds raised stay in Manitoba and are invested in research and public awareness campaigns.

Ed Johner is a prostate cancer survivor and the Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad spokesperson. He says a simple three-minute prostate specific antigen test can save your life.

"I wouldn’t be here today if I had avoided being tested," said Johner. "That’s our message to men and their families – the best way to fight prostate cancer is with early diagnosis."

Since it started in 2009, the Manitoba Motorcycle Ride for Dad has raised over $5 million for the fight against prostate cancer.
