On Friday, May 30, Alberta Parks issued a warning for Gunnery Mountain in southern K-Country.

This is just a warning and not a closure; however, it went into effect on Friday and will remain so until further notice.

They are reporting that two hikers were followed by a cougar while hiking.

Gunnery Mountain is on Hwy 541 between the areas of Highwood Day Use area and Sentinel Day Use area.

Alberta Parks lists the following tips to avoid a surprise encounter with a cougar.

  • Make plenty of noise and travel in groups.
  • Be aware of your surroundings. Look and listen for cougars and their signs.
  • Keep your pet on a leash.
  • Learn more about cougar safety on our webpage or at WildSmart.

They also ask that you report all cougar sightings as soon as possible at 403-591-7755.
