Calgary police say photo radar will be deployed in 17 neighbourhoods throughout June.
“For the month of June, photo radar will be focusing on the communities of Altadore, Auburn Bay, Cambrian Heights, Elboya, Evergreen, Glamorgan, Glenbrook, Kingsland, Marlborough, Marlborough Park, Patterson, Silver Springs, Strathcona, Varsity, Wildwood, and Woodbine,” the Calgary Police Service said in a June 1 statement.
“Photo radar will also be attending construction zones where workers are present.”
Fifty-two Intersection Safety Camera locations remain active throughout the city and are “capable of capturing red light infractions,” the statement said.
“These cameras continue to reduce collisions and foster a safer driving environment at our intersections.”
The service also noted that “speeds in excess of 50 km/hr over the speed limit result in an appearance before a judge.”
“These drivers not only put themselves in danger, but they also endanger the lives of others.”
According to the Government of Alberta, standard speeding fines begin at $81 for driving 1 kilometre per hour over the limit and increase incrementally to $495 for 50 km/h over. Fines include the 20 per cent Victims of Crime surcharge.
For example, driving 10 km/h over the posted limit results in a $110 fine. A 30 km/h overage results in a $249 fine. At 40 km/h over the limit, the penalty is $373.
Fines double in construction zones or when emergency responders are present. In those cases, a 10 km/h overage results in a $220 fine, while driving 30 km/h over the limit costs $499. Travelling 50 km/h over the limit in these conditions results in a $991 fine and a mandatory court appearance.
As of April 1, Alberta restricts photo radar use to school zones, playground zones and construction zones. Intersection Safety Devices may only enforce red-light violations.
