Members of the Cousins Skateboard Community gathered together to serve Siksika Nation.

A cleanup initiative took place along Highway 547 on Sunday (June 1) and ended at the community's admin hall.

Volunteers geared up with gloves, garbage bags, and trash pickers to remove litter along the roadside.

"We aim to help the community. One of our slogans is 'make your ancestors proud' and one way of doing it is just by giving back," explained CJ Cutter, co-founder and co-operator of Cousins Skateboard Community.

Volunteers will continue the cleanup multiple times throughout the summer, focusing on parks, popular public places, and elder's yards.

"Having these community workers and supporters come out and help work together on doing this is totally worth taking the Sunday and doing this," Cutter added.

Since 2021, the nonprofit organization has a mission to help youths connect through their passion of skateboarding.

The group also collaborates with Strathmore Skatemore Girls and looks to foster more partnerships with surrounding groups.

"They want to be a part of something," noted Cutter, emphasizing the importance of connection and community for upcoming generations.

Cousins Skateboard Community operates out of the ODR Skatepark and offers free skateboards and pads for the youth on Tuesday evenings.
