The Okotoks Public Library was recently honoured with an award from the Marigold Library System.
They were presented with a Making a Difference Award for their “Reading Dragons” program.
The program, inspired by a similar initiative from the Dover Public Library in Dover, Ohio, aims to boost literacy among children aged six to 12.
Participants earn dragon trading cards for every half hour of reading.
Each month introduces four new dragons, each with four growth stages: egg, baby, teen and adult. Readers can watch their dragons grow as they continue to read.
Events and celebrations are also held to celebrate reading milestones and trade their cards.
According to the Okotoks Public Library, the program, which launched in September of 2024, saw 352 participants who collected over 16,000 cards and logged 8,111 reading hours.
The program will return for a second year in September 2025.
