Last week, Northcott Prairie School held its first annual Experiential Learning Week (ELW) for students in grades seven and eight.

Devon Sawby, principal of the school, shared that week week-long event allowed students will delve into various careers and pathways.

"Students had the opportunity to talk with experts, having them come into our building, sometimes going to visit them. There were multiple avenues of exploring that career or industry that they (the students) were interested in."

Students were able to explore careers like beauty, construction, music, art, physical training, science of the brain, entrepreneurship, and many more.

Tara Adewale, a seventh-grade student at the school, explained she wanted to learn more about the science of the brain.

"Initially, I thought brain science would be looking at the parts of the brain and what they do, but it was more psychology and mental health, but we did look at neuroscience."

She explained they had different activities to do, listened to different speakers and got to talk with those who work in those fields.

"I personally think that the week was fun, I made new friends, I learned new things, and it was a cool experience."

Come Friday last week, the students showcased what they learned to their parents.

Grade seven and eight students were mixed together depending on the experiential learning option that they chose, and so they weren't necessarily with their friends. That was sometimes hard for some students but good for others," shared Sawby.

From the school's perspective, the week did exactly what the teachers were hoping it would do, exposing students to different careers and industries they might not be familiar with.

"I'm really looking forward to seeing what's going to happen next year during the ELW."

Adewale concluded by saying she hopes students are able to enjoy future ELWs like she did this year.
