A 17-year-old from Airdrie is among two youths charged after a series of break-and-enters and vehicle thefts occurred across Calgary, Chestermere, and Airdrie in May, according to the RCMP.

Police allege the suspects entered homes through main floor windows and stole wallets and car keys, which were then used to steal vehicles from the properties.

On May 30, Calgary police requested assistance from Chestermere RCMP in locating one of the stolen vehicles.

RCMP say the vehicle was found in Chestermere, where officers also interrupted another break-and-enter in progress.

Two 17-year-old youths — one from Airdrie and one from Calgary — were arrested by Chestermere and Strathmore RCMP with assistance from Calgary police.

Each youth is charged with two counts of break and enter, one count of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, one count of motor vehicle theft, and two counts of theft under $5,000.

Police say further charges from both the RCMP and Calgary police may be pending as the investigation continues.

The youths were released from custody and are scheduled to appear in the Alberta Court of Justice in Chestermere on June 11.

Their names cannot be released under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

"This is but another example of how the RCMP and Calgary Police Service continue to utilize a collective response to enhance community safety and well-being in Southern Alberta and the City of Calgary," Chief Superintendent Wayne Nichols, District Officer for Southern Alberta RCMP, said in a statement.

RCMP is reminding the public to ensure residences and vehicles are properly secured when not home and during the night.

"Criminals can be very brazen and waking up to someone in your house would be very terrifying," the statement said.
