RJ Sigurdson, MLA for Highwood and Alberta's Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation, is in Southeast Asia this week to promote agri-trade with Alberta.
The trip comes amid uncertainty around North American trade and the potential effects of tariffs.
Sigurdson will visit Vietnam and the Philippines, which, according to the province, were ranked the second and third-largest Southeast Asian markets for Alberta’s agriculture and agri-food exports.
"Expanding on our relationships with international partners is an important step towards the diversification of our agricultural markets," said Sigurdson in a media release. "Establishing a strong presence in Southeast Asian markets during this groundbreaking mission will help ensure the long-term success of Alberta’s economy and agri-food sector."
In 2024, Alberta exported $165.4 million worth of agri-food products to Vietnam and $91.9 million to the Philippines. Major exports included beef, pork, and animal feed.
During the trip, Sigurdson will meet with agri-business leaders, government officials, and investors. His itinerary includes facility tours, promotional events, and discussions aimed at boosting trade and investment opportunities.
The mission runs from May 30 to June 8.
