Fish and wildlife officers arrested two individuals and issued multiple charges during a recent angler compliance operation on the Bow River near Bearspaw Dam, in Rocky View County just northwest of Calgary.

According to a June 2 update from Alberta Fish and Wildlife Enforcement, one angler was seen using a set line—a method often associated with bait fishing. Officers confirmed the individual was using worms, which are classified as a prohibited bait under Alberta’s fishing regulations.

Further checks revealed the same person had three outstanding warrants tied to previous fisheries offences, including over-limits and prior use of illegal bait. He was arrested, released on appearance notices for the earlier charges, and issued a court date for the new offence. Officers seized all fishing gear as evidence.

Shortly afterward, officers encountered two more anglers upriver. As an officer approached, the men tried to dump the fish in their bag among nearby boulders. A search revealed three brown trout. Both individuals were also found to be using prohibited bait.

They were ticketed for fisheries violations. One of the two was arrested on an unrelated outstanding warrant.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife reminded the public not to confront suspected poachers directly. Illegal fishing activity can be reported 24 hours a day by calling 1-800-642-3800 or online at alberta.ca/report-poacher. Callers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward.
