Construction of a new Kindergarten to Grade 9 school in Airdrie’s South Windsong neighbourhood is expected to begin this spring, with an opening planned for fall 2027.
Rocky View Schools confirmed the 905-student facility will be delivered through a public-private partnership (P3), with the construction contract awarded by RVS to EllisDon. The project was approved in Alberta’s 2024 budget and is the first of three new schools planned for Airdrie over the next several years.
“This project has been a long time coming,” said RVS board chair Fiona Gilbert in a written statement. “It is critical for RVS that the government expedite construction and build these schools as quickly as possible, to provide modular classrooms while we wait for construction to complete, and to ensure a steady stream of additional school approvals in the upcoming years to keep pace with our growth.”
The school will be located on the southwest edge of Airdrie, west of the Windsong community and north of Hillcrest Avenue. The division says the design prioritizes efficiency and flexibility to maximize student learning space, and similar architectural plans may be used on future builds to help speed up delivery.
Airdrie’s population grew by 55 per cent between 2014 and 2024. RVS says between 350 and 500 new students enter its schools in the city each year, with 12 of Airdrie’s 17 schools currently operating at full capacity.
To help alleviate short-term crowding, the division recently received approval for five modular classrooms and one relocated washroom unit.
Public consultation to determine the new school’s attendance area is expected in 2026/27. A separate process to select a name for the school will also take place at that time. Community members will be invited to apply for the naming committee under RVS Administrative Procedure 5402.
Two additional schools were approved for planning—not construction funding—in Budget 2025: a K–9 school in Lanark and a high school in Chelsea, Chestermere. RVS says it is optimistic construction approval for those projects will be included in a future provincial budget.
