After an incident involving a youth riding her bike crossing 9th Street at Thornhill was struck by a vehicle, Morden Police Inspector Sean Aune is reminding us about the obligations we have in a case like this.

"After speaking with the officer involved in this, it appears the youth riding the bike was hit by the vehicle, the vehicle stops and asked the person if they're all right, but often people are in a state of shock or they're hurt or they're recovering from it, and then the vehicle ends up just driving away once they say they're okay. In fact, this is considered an accident under the Highway Traffic Act, so you are required to exchange particulars with the person. That was not done in this situation."

With that in mind, Aune added that's why it was noted in the latest Morden Police report that no information was shared.

"This is actually a person we would want to speak to," he said. "We're glad they stopped to make sure the person was okay, but you do have a requirement to share their information."

The female bicyclist sustained minor injuries and her bike was damaged in the collision.

"If the person reads this, and is willing to come forward, we'd appreciate for them to call our office and we can just talk to them," Aune explained. "In my experience, it's more common the person doesn't know... you do have to actually stop and exchange your information."
