The active transportation pathway between Morden and Winkler is gaining momentum, along with a major financial boost thanks to a collaboration between the Morden Area and the Winkler Community Foundations.
Foundations announce matching grant
Construction on the pathway is already underway, and now the two foundations are stepping up with a joint matching grant, each pledging to match community donations of up to $25,000, for a combined total of up to $50,000.
The idea of two community foundations supporting a trail that physically connects their cities made immediate sense to both groups. Each approached the project committee separately and quickly saw the benefit of combining efforts.
“It’s a regional affair here. Trail between Morden and Winkler, and so it just seemed natural to get involved,” said Robert Friesen, Treasurer of the Morden Area Foundation. “It’s kind of neat because it’s a trail joining the two communities, and now the two community foundations to get together and do a matching grant that can double people’s money. That’s just an awesome opportunity.”
Community support already strong
John Loewen of the Stanley Trail Association said that public opinion of the trail remains strong, for the most part.
“Predominantly, it's very positive. Every now and then, there are the haters. But almost exclusively, it's just been a real feel-good response.”
With visible progress on the trail already underway, that excitement is growing.
“We certainly haven't heard any concerns... and the progress is just so exciting to see. The optics are great,” he added.

Healthy living and healthy partnerships
As for both foundations, the initiative is about more than a walkway — it’s about building connections, encouraging healthy living, and celebrating what’s possible through partnership.
“We love partnerships,” said Myra Peters, Executive Director of the Winkler Community Foundation. “We love working together with others to impact our community, and so this is a great opportunity — working with Morden — for an initiative that’s impacting both of our communities.”
Peters added, “We look forward to seeing this happen.”
How to get involved
Community members are invited to take part in the matching challenge. Donations can be made by cheque at the civic offices in Morden and Winkler, as well as the RM of Stanley office. Tax-deductible donations can also be made online at the Stanley Trail Association website.
