The 2025 Manitoba 55 Plus Games officially kicked off Monday night in Steinbach, with cheers, music, dancing, and heartfelt words.
The Pat Porter Active Living Centre buzzed with energy as over 200 athletes, volunteers, dignitaries, and guests gathered for the opening ceremony of the province’s largest multi-sport event for adults 55 and older.
Michelle Sawatzky-Koop emceed the evening. “It's gonna be a wonderful three days,” she said. “I admire you all for your dedication to being active and your ability to have fun. It’s never too late to be incredible at what you do!”

The athletes were piped in by Heather Purvis, followed by an energetic performance from the Mason Hoop Dancers—sisters Kimberly, Charisma, and Nakiyah Mason—earning big applause from the crowd.
Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra offered a big Steinbach welcome to those gathered.
“We’ve got competitors here from all across the province,” he said. “We’re proud of the amazing facilities we have here, including the new Southeast Event Centre, and we’re thrilled to share them with you. Best of luck in your competitions, and have fun!”

The excitement continued with remarks from Gerry Sul, President and CEO of Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries, a longtime sponsor of the Games. He brought humour and heart during his speech.
“I was so impressed getting piped in, honestly, that’s been a dream of mine,” he joked. “I'm actually old enough to compete, I play pickleball. I should probably join next year. But what we do best is make sure events like this get the support they need. It’s about building community, staying active, and celebrating the incredible volunteers who make this happen.”
He also emphasized the deeper meaning behind the Games:
“It’s not just sport. It’s social, emotional, and physical well-being. This event is about staying connected and healthy as we age. And let’s be honest, we’ve all earned some time to enjoy life."
The final speaker of the night, Louise Hutton, board chair for Active Aging Manitoba, brought it all home. She highlighted the legacy and spirit of the Games, now in their 42nd year.
“This is the largest 55-plus event in the province,” she said. “And Steinbach has been a wonderful host. This is their third time holding the Games, and their facilities are amazing. I had the chance to tour the golf course, the pool, and the fields this afternoon. Your community is going to wow our athletes.”
Hutton reminded everyone that the Games are about more than competition.
“It’s all about fellowship, meeting people from across Manitoba and just enjoying the sport that you love.”

At the end of the ceremony, Hutton officially declared, “The 42nd Manitoba 55 Plus Games are open.”
After the ribbon was cut, guests were invited to stay for snacks and conversation.
Hutton wrapped up the evening with, “We’re expecting about 1,000 participants this week. So, Steinbach, here we come!”
