KINDERSLEY, Sask. — The Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs has cancelled its 75th Anniversary Fire Chiefs Conference, originally set to take place in Kindersley from June 5 to 7, in response to the provincewide wildfire emergency.
Mike Kwasnica, president of the association, announced the decision Tuesday morning, citing the ongoing state of emergency and the strain on emergency services across the province.
“This conference was to be a celebration of 75 years of leadership, service and camaraderie,” Kwasnica said in a statement. “While we are disappointed not to be gathering, we recognize the safety and well-being of our communities and members must come first.”
Wildfires have displaced more than 8,000 people across Saskatchewan in recent weeks, with La Ronge and surrounding communities among the latest forced to evacuate due to fast-moving flames.
Kwasnica expressed gratitude to members, partners and sponsors for their understanding and support during what he called a challenging time.
“Our thoughts remain with those affected by the emergency, and with all the first responders working tirelessly across this province,” he said.
