Motorists in Portage can soon show their support for the fight against prostate cancer with a new specialty licence plate from Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI).
The Ride for Dad plate was officially unveiled during the annual Ride for Dad event in Winnipeg on May 31 and will be available to the public starting July 14.
The plate can be ordered through Autopac brokers or any MPI service centre.
Supporting Manitobans through awareness and funding
The new plate will raise money for the Manitoba Prostate Cancer Support Group, with $30 from each $70 plate going directly to the organization.
“The plates sell for $70 and $30 of that goes directly to the Manitoba Prostate Cancer Support Group,” says MPI spokesperson Tara Seel.
New plate available for both passenger vehicles and motorcycles
The Ride for Dad design is available for both passenger vehicles and motorcycles.
“So many Manitobans are affected by prostate cancer. It's often identified as a male cancer,” continues Seel. “But really it affects everybody. It affects families, friends, loved ones of men who are enduring prostate cancer.”
Other plates available for both passenger vehicles and motorcycles include: Bombers, Jets, Goldeyes, Wheat Kings, Curling, Humane Society, U of W, Support Our Troops, Basketball, Jets Heritage, and MMIWG.
Charity-driven program continues to grow
MPI’s Specialty Plate Program has raised more than $5.5 million to date for Manitoba charities.
“We're really happy that now we're adding prostate cancer to that list and we're able to help even more Manitobans through this program,” added Seel.
A strong showing of community support
The new plate design is the result of a direct request from the Ride for Dad group, and MPI says the response at the event has been encouraging.
“We want to thank the Ride for Dad for being such a gracious host to us on Saturday at the event,” remarks Seel. “It was amazing to see all those motorcycles there and supported and united in the fight against prostate cancer.”
