In Loving Memory of Edward Derksen

It is with deep sadness and love that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Edward “Ed” Derksen, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at the age of 84, with his family by his side.

Born on October 8, 1940, on the family farm just outside of Plum Coulee, MB, Ed was a man of deep faith. As a young man, he was baptized in his home congregation, the Bergthaler Mennonite Church in Winkler, MB. His faith guided his life and shaped the kind, humble, and compassionate way he treated others.

After graduating from high school, Ed attended Teachers’ College and began his career in a one-room schoolhouse just south of Morden, MB. The family later moved to Winnipeg, MB, where he continued teaching before relocating to Calgary, AB, where he built a life filled with love, hard work, and dedication. Eventually, they returned to Morden, where Ed started a commercial real estate business and later transitioned into advertising.

Ed especially cherished the twenty wonderful years he and Linda spent in Parksville, BC, during retirement. They embraced the natural beauty of Vancouver Island, found peace in the rhythm of coastal life, and took great joy in being near the ocean. He and Linda shared a strong and joyful partnership—golfing and curling together, cheering on their favorite baseball and hockey teams, and enjoying many memorable trips with their children. Known affectionately as “Coach,” Ed was proud to be a co-founder of the Pembina Valley Hawks and took great joy in mentoring youth and supporting the sport of hockey.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Linda; his children, Valerie (Richard), Duane (Karen), Christie (Mike), and Becki (Mike); his eleven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; as well as extended family and dear friends who were fortunate to know his steady presence and generous heart. He was an unwavering source of strength and hope, always choosing optimism and offering steadfast love and encouragement to those around him. Ed was predeceased by his parents, Ann and Frank Derksen, his sister, Shirley, and his brother, Dave.

Ed’s quiet strength and warmth touched all who knew him. He faced life’s challenges—including over two decades with Parkinson’s disease—with courage, grace, and unwavering optimism. His legacy is one of faith, perseverance, and deep love for his family.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at AgeCare Glenmore for their dedicated support over the past year, and to the compassionate team at Rockyview General Hospital for the attentive and tender care they provided during Edward’s final days. Ed will be missed beyond words, remembered always, and loved forever.

A Celebration of Ed’s Life will be held at Westside Community Church (831 Thornhill Street, Morden, MB), on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at 2:00 p.m.
