The Second Annual Outlaw Buckers & Oil Kings Match Bronc Riding event was held on Tuesday evening here in Weyburn, touted by organizers as a Stampede experience.
The top 30 ranked riders in the world standings were welcomed to compete, including four-time world champion Zeke Thurston, as well as multiple NFR qualifiers and multiple Canadian champions. Each was matched with bucking horses from the Outlaw Buckers, the C5, and the Calgary Stampede Rodeo.
First out of the gate in the championship round, Sage Newman of Montana, with a score of 89.5 on the Calgary Stampede's Crocket, took the crown as the seven other final riders following his performance were unable to beat his score. He will have $4,000 to donate to a charity of his choosing.
Newman said of Weyburn's competition, "The people, the horses, everything, I love coming up here. The horses are big, strong, and they buck. It's just a fun time. I love it."
A charity auction was also held during the event with a poster bringing in $4,000 from Trevor Van Alstyne of Alchem, and an oilfield hard hat bringing in $6,000 from Dan Cugnet of Valleyview Petroleums, which in total raised another $10,000 this year for STARS Air Ambulance.
Medicine Hat's Morgan Klaiber provided entertainment for the tailgate party and the after-party.
