Liam Penner is just six years old but this past weekend, the golf sensation from Mitchell won a tournament that was held at Maplewood Golf Course.
If you think that six is young, Liam says he started golfing at a much younger age because of someone very special. "(I golf because of) my dad," he says with a big, proud smile. "I was one when I started golf."
Pretty amazing for the young athlete to be getting better as quick as he is, but Liam says he's enjoying the work. "We practice three times a week."
When it comes to his favourite part of the game, Liam is pretty quick to answer, "I'd say maybe the chipping," he says humbly.
This past weekend at Maplewood, Liam says he not only battled other golfers but he also battled Mother Nature. "It was hot but it was fun."
For finishing first, Liam says he got something special. "I won a first place medal," he says proudly, as it's the first medal he's ever won for golf.
Liam won't be slowing down any time soon and plans to keep golfing, "it's the only sport that I'm signed up for right now," he says with a laugh.
In three weeks, Liam and his dad Doug will be heading out to another tournament, "I'm practicing for it now," Liam says. "I'm probably going to work on my putting, that's what'll I'll be doing most at the golf course. That's what I was struggling with at the tournament."
Dough says he is loving getting to spend time with his son on the course and he's rediscovered his love of the game thanks to being able to share it with Liam. "It's awesome," Doug says very proudly. "It gives me a reason to come out and practice, too. We have a lot of fun together on the course. It's a great time."
As Liam was coming down the stretch and first place was in sight, Doug admits he got a little on edge but not so much about the score. "I was pretty nervous," he says with a chuckle. "The heat, it was +31 and he had never walked 18 holes before, I was just hoping he had fun and that he could walk the whole course, and he did it, it was awesome."
To see Liam's big smile at the end meant the world to the proud dad. "It felt amazing, it was great," Doug says beaming. "I love how much he loves golf because that's great time to spend together and we're looking forward to that next tournament coming up."
Another highlight for Liam is getting to drive the cart from time to time, "oh, I've been driving since I was four," Liam says like it's no big deal.
The next tournament is in Winnipeg and there will be an entire community cheering on Liam Penner.
