Winnipeg is currently under an air quality warning as the winds have shifted and are pushing the smoke from wildfires over southern Manitoba.
"The air quality health index is 10 or higher in most of the region," says Dave Carlsen, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada (EC). "This is the forest fire smoke coming from northern Manitoba and northern Saskatchewan."
There are also two out-of-control wildfires in the Whiteshell region as of June 5, according to the province.
"We can expect it [the smoke] to still around today and tonight, especially in the Red River Valley. Then it should clear off tomorrow morning sometime into Ontario."
As of right now, southern Manitoba is expecting some rain showers on Saturday starting in the afternoon. This could help with the wildfires themselves, as well as the smoke.
For people with weak lungs or who are more susceptible to smoke, Carlsen says, "They should go in where you've got good filtered air or put on one of your masks. Something to make sure you're not breathing in too much of the outside smoky air."
