Manitobans are staying true to the slogan on our license plates, 'Friendly Manitoba', with people across the province stepping up as wildfires continue to burn out of control in northern Manitoba, leading to the evacuation of thousands of people.

This week, the Kildonan MCC Thrift Shop was able to help out by donating some much-needed items to evacuation centres in Winnipeg.

"With the support of our amazing volunteers and community, we provided children’s books, handmade quilts, baby blankets and sheets, cots, playpens, strollers, and toys—small comforts that go a long way in times of crisis," said the thrift store in a post on Facebook.

Some of the volunteers from the thrift store are also giving their time at the evacuation centre.

The Mennonite Central Committee is also recruiting and deploying volunteers to evacuation centres to cover night shifts, supporting the work of Mennonite Disaster Service and providing essential services to those displaced.

MDS is accepting volunteer applications as well to help support displaced families and communities affected by the wildfires.

"We sent calls out to local churches and volunteers on Friday and Saturday. Our community has stepped up in a phenomenal way. And while needs ebb and flow at the reception centre, we are continuing to call for volunteers to service evacuees through day, evening and night shifts," said Ross Penner, executive director of MDS Canada.

Anyone interested in signing up for a volunteer shift can contact Evelyn Peters-Rojas by telephone at (204) 479-2485 or email mbwildfires@mds.org.
