Members of three Saskatchewan credit unions are being asked to cast their vote this week as Conexus, Cornerstone, and Synergy Credit Unions consider a proposed merger that would create the largest credit union in the province, and one of the largest in the country.
The vote opened Tuesday and runs until Friday, June 13, at noon, with members able to vote online or in person at any of the 57 participating branches across Saskatchewan. Conexus members also have the option to vote through their digital banking platform. The results of the vote are expected the following week.
If approved by members and regulators, the merger would take effect January 1, 2026.
In southeast Saskatchewan, five branches would be affected by the merger. There is a Conexus Credit Union branch in Midale, while Cornerstone Credit Union has branches in Arcola, Kipling, Montmartre, and Vibank.
Supporters of the merger say it’s a chance to strengthen the cooperative financial model while preserving local service and community investment.
“This merger is the next chapter in the storied credit union history in Saskatchewan,” said Ken Kosolofski, Board Chair of Conexus. “We believe that this merger will allow us to make the necessary investments to remain strong, competitive and committed to meeting the needs of members both today and for years to come.”
“If approved by members and the regulator, this merger would be a catalyst for economic growth in Saskatchewan,” added Heidi Schofer, Board Chair of Cornerstone. “Our profits will stay in Saskatchewan, with 5 per cent of pre-tax earnings reinvested in our local communities.”
The proposed credit union would operate in 50 communities across the province and include a modernized member rewards program and commitment to local decision-making.
“Economic headwinds and uncertainty show the value of supporting local,” said Trevor Beaton, CEO of Synergy. “Let’s continue to move forward together for a thriving Saskatchewan.”
For more information or to ask questions about the merger, members are encouraged to contact their credit union directly or attend a scheduled information session.
