Rocky View County Fire Services has issued a fire ban for both its East and West regions, citing persistent hot and dry weather.
The ban is effective immediately and will remain in place until conditions improve. Under the fire ban, all burning and fireworks permits are suspended, and burning is prohibited, except for the following:
-
Indoor household fireplaces
-
Properly attended camp stoves
-
Barbecues (charcoal, propane, or natural gas)
-
Wood pellet grills
-
Propane/natural gas fire pits
-
Oil well flaring (must be registered at 403-264-1022)
Meanwhile, the City of Airdrie remains under a fire advisory, first issued on May 30.
The advisory remains in effect due to current and forecasted dry conditions. Campfires are still allowed, but may be restricted or banned in the coming days.
Under Airdrie’s fire advisory:
-
All existing fire permits are suspended, except for acceptable burn barrels and incinerators
-
No new fire permits will be issued
-
Some essential burning may be permitted at the fire department’s discretion
Prohibited in Airdrie:
-
Burning without a valid fire permit (except backyard firepits)
-
Consumer fireworks
Permitted in Airdrie:
-
Residential backyard firepits and wood campfires that follow regulations
-
CSA/ULC-approved natural gas or propane fire pits
-
Gas, propane or electric stoves, BBQs, and smokers (CSA/ULC approved)
-
Solid-fuel BBQs (charcoal, briquettes, wood)
-
CSA-approved catalytic or infrared heaters
-
Farm-use burning barrels
-
Incinerator fires
-
Approved industrial site fires (e.g. energy, forestry, agriculture)
Fines apply for any outdoor fire lit during a fire ban inside Airdrie city limits. Those responsible may also be charged firefighting costs if a blaze escapes control.
Fire bans and advisories vary by jurisdiction. While Airdrie sets its own fire status, provincial bans apply to Crown Land within Alberta’s Forest Protection Area.
