Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for the Pembina and Red River Valleys, as well as all of Southeastern Manitoba due to the possibility of funnel cloud development.

"Conditions will be favourable for the development of funnel clouds today," noted the Statement. "Conditions will last until the evening hours."

According to Environment Canada, these types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms. This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.

"The low pressure system which brought the quick burst of rain and thunderstorms mid to late afternoon Saturday continues to move southward out of northern Manitoba," explained CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. "It is responsible for the potential instability which could lead to these rapidly developing thunderstorms Sunday that could produce funnel clouds."

Just less than a month ago, Henry Blatz captured what he believed to be a landspout tornado on his camera near Gretna. During the evening of Thursday, May 15th he shot video of what appeared to be rotation in the cloud deck, and also on the ground within the dust cloud

At the time, Environment Canada indicated there was insufficient evidence to confirm the Gretna tornado report, however, meteorologists continued to investigate it.
