Manitobans have once again proven the power of community.
On June 5, more than 30 radio stations across the province joined forces for the first-ever Manitoba Day of Caring for Wildfire Evacuees, a province-wide broadcast initiative to support those displaced by wildfires.
As of Monday, June 9, the campaign had raised an impressive $419,437, with donations still being accepted. The funds support the Canadian Red Cross 2025 Manitoba Wildfires Appeal, which is providing emergency shelter, food, hygiene kits, transportation, and emotional support to evacuees.
To date, more than 14,300 people from over 5,400 households have registered with the Canadian Red Cross after being forced from their homes due to ongoing wildfires. Many are currently being housed in emergency shelters in Winnipeg, Thompson, Winkler and Portage la Prairie.
“This is not their first evacuation,” says Fouzia Bazid, a Red Cross site manager in Winnipeg. “To see a familiar face with our red [vests], that gives them comfort.”
Federal and provincial matching triples donations
Thanks to a matching initiative from both the federal and Manitoba governments, every dollar donated is tripled. That means the impact of each contribution is magnified — and the matching program continues through June 27.
Luc Mullinder, vice-president of the Canadian Red Cross for Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Nunavut, emphasizes the breadth of support they are providing to evacuees.
“Our role right now has been to provide emergency accommodations, food, emergency supplies, and transportation,” Mullinder says. “Basically, filling in some of the gaps that exist when communities plan to support their people.”
Donations can be made online or by texting RADIO to 20222 to donate $10.
Saskatchewan campaign coming June 12
Inspired by Manitoba’s example, radio stations across Saskatchewan are set to host their own Day of Caring on June 12, again supporting the Canadian Red Cross’s wildfire relief efforts.
As the wildfire season continues, organizers and responders say the need remains urgent, but so does the spirit of giving.
