Daniel Andrew Schmid
April 4, 1942 – June 7, 2025
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel “Dan” Andrew Schmid. Dan fell ill in February and, much too soon, passed away on June 7, 2025. His kindness, unwavering support for his family and loved ones and the simple joy he brought to everyday moments, made a difference in the lives of many. His soft-spoken nature and conversations, marked by warmth, thoughtfulness and a quiet wit that put others at ease, will be missed. His absence is deeply felt; however, his calm and peaceful nature will continue to inspire all who knew him to cherish the simple moments, treat others with kindness, and to live with gentle strength.
Daniel Andrew Schmid was born April 4, 1942, in Watson, Saskatchewan, to Frank and Amelia “Molly” (nee Knafelc) Schmid. After graduating high school, Dan married and started a family in Watson. He began making his mark on the world after receiving his Journeymen Carpenter ticket on August 31, 1966. Throughout his life, Dan worked in construction, starting with the family businesses, Schmid Industries and Four Brothers in Watson. Following that, he was employed by McNevin Construction of Saskatoon, working and living in several northern Saskatchewan communities during his tenure. This eventually led him to put down roots with his family in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. Dan later took the bold step of opening his own construction business, Treeland Construction in Meadow Lake, and at age 55 retired from that busy role, opting instead to pick and choose jobs on his own terms and timelines. Over the years, his contributions to the development of Meadow Lake and many northern communities have left a lasting legacy and a significant impact on the northern Saskatchewan landscape.
Dan was a charter member of the Meadow Lake Kinsmen Club (aka Kin Club), a non-profit organization that promotes service, fellowship and positive values. He was also a valued member of the Ducks Unlimited, Meadow Lake Chapter, a non-profit organization dedicated to conserving wetlands and habitats for waterfowl. He enjoyed golf, fishing, travel and always made time for the people and things that mattered most to him.
Dan is survived by his five daughters: Laina (Mike) Chwelos and Carmela (David) Perrin of Edmonton, AB, Koren (Rodney) Leer of Cochrane, AB, Michelle (Neil) Maier of Lloydminster, AB, and Petrina (David) Solomon of Cochrane, AB; grandchildren: Marshall, Danielle, Luke, Franklin, Jamie, Sydney, Taylor, Amanda, Katherine, Racheal, Gabriel and Amelia, as well as six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings and other family members: Dolores Kastello of Waukesha, WI, Gerald (Judy) Schmid and David (Judy) Schmid of Watson, Edward (Patricia) Schmid of Harrison Hot Springs, BC, and Edith Kwasnicia, Marianne Schmid and Leonard Schmid of Watson. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Amelia “Molly” (nee Knafelc) Schmid; his brother Leo Schmid; brothers-in-law, Charles Kastello, and Larry Kwasnicia; as well as his long-time partner Gladys Brown. Additionally, he is mourned by many cousins, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and by numerous close friends and extended family including, Randy and June Plemel, Treena Schiml-Neufeld, Rick and Shelly Leschuck, and countless others who he was close with.
