Murray Schemenauer
May 23, 1951 - June 4, 2025
It is with great sadness that the family of Murray Edwin Schemenauer 74 years of Humboldt, announce his passing on Wednesday, June 4, 2025 at Humboldt District Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Murray was born on May 23, 1951 to John and Adeline (nee Theis) Schemenauer at Humboldt, where he lived on the family’s farm in St James, obtaining his education at the St. James and Lake Lenore Schools.
Shortly following Murray met the love of his life, Leona Menz, at a social event in Humboldt. After a 2- year courtship they were married on July 4, 1970 at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Muenster.
Together they moved to Calgary where Murray attended SAIT and obtained his journeyman ticket for Plumbing & Gas Fitting, where he worked for J.H. Oel Mechanical, heading up the Commercial Division and becoming Partner, and eventually the Sole Proprietor.
Murray and Leona were blessed with two children, Renee and Arron. As a family they had many camping and fishing trips in Alberta and Saskatchewan, and travelled to destinations across Canada, US and Mexico. Murray and Leona always supported their children in various sports and activities, and enjoyed curling and bowling themselves. Murray and Leona also loved football, attending games in Calgary when they could, but remained a true Roughrider Fan.
In 1998 Murray retired from plumbing at the age of 47. They moved to Lake Lenore where Murray and Leona together built their dream home. This is where Murray began to enjoy gardening and yard care, which always looked pristine. They also spent many early mornings in the peaceful and tranquil surroundings on the Lake Lenore Lake where they enjoyed fishing.
Murray and Leona were blessed to escape the Saskatchewan winters and go to Arizona to enjoy the warmth and great company of relatives and friends. They also enjoyed a few Cruises over the years, and travelled to Germany with his siblings.
One of his greatest pleasures was time spent with his two grandchildren. Living just down the road from them, and referred to as “Papa & Grandma”, many wonderful memories were created spending so much quality time together. Papa always had a truly special smile for them, holding them both very near and dear to his heart. In 2019 Murray had the special honor of becoming “Great-Papa” to a great-grandson Linus in Victoria, BC.
Unfortunately, at the young age of 48 Murray was diagnosed with Early Onset Parkinson’s which progressed through the years, eventually leading to a diagnosis of Lewy Body Dementia in 2019. As time passed, this made it difficult for Murray to continue enjoying his yard, so in 2022 Murray and Leona moved to Humboldt.
Murray’s gentle, kind, and unconditional love will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 55 years, less 1 month, Leona of Humboldt.
Two children, two grandchildren and one great grandson:
Daughter, Renee (David) Nieman of Humboldt and family Luke (Megan) Nieman of Victoria, BC and son Linus and Anna (Drayson) McGilvery of Saskatoon;
Son, Arron Schemenauer of Humboldt.
Six siblings: Shirley (Bob) Ward of Calgary, AB, Howard (Yvette) Schemenauer of St. James, Ron Schemenauer of Lake Lenore, Delmer (Theresa) Schemenauer of DeWinton, AB, Yvonne Zeabin (Greg) of Toronto, ON and Rick (Bev) Schemenauer of St. Brieux; brother and sisters-in-law: Loretta (Fred) Kuemper of Terrace, BC, Leo (Carolanne) Menz of Humboldt and Anne Menz of Humboldt; and by numerous nieces and nephews.
Murray was predeceased by his parents John and Adeline Schemenauer; brother Peter Schemenauer; brother-in-law Gord Zeabin and several members of the Tony Menz Family.
The family would like to thank Sarah from Country Care Sask. (Private Care & Assisted Living) for her help in allowing us to keep dad at home as long as we could. Also, a huge thank-you to the Palliative Care Team at Humboldt District Hospital for your compassionate care that was given to dad and us. You were all so great!
A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, July 7, 2025 at 11am from St. Anthony’s R.C. Church, Lake Lenore, celebrated by Fr. John Abhan-Bonsu. Interment will follow at a later date.
Dad lived with Parkinson’s Disease for many years. As challenging as that was, Lewy Body Dementia was worse. It is a terrible disease. It took such a toll on Dad, and us, especially during his last few years. It is our hope that through his passing we can shed some light on this disease.
Leona, Arron, Renee, Dave and family
