The City of Chestermere has announced plans to purchase the Lakeside Greens Golf Course.
On Friday (June 6) Mayor Shannon Dean appeared in a video posted to the city's Facebook page to speak more about the purchase.
"This decision is about protecting 127 acres of land centrally located in our community," said Dean. "Back in 2023, over 2,000 signatures were collected by the Lakeside Preservation Society to preserve and protect the golf course."
According to the city's website, the purchase has not been finalized yet, with the city currently in the due diligence process. The cost of the purchase is still under review, with the price being made public once the process is complete.
"It became clear that should council not make that decision, the land would be sold to a private developer, and golf would end at the end of the season, and that risk is very real," added Dean.
"We've seen that play out at golf courses throughout Alberta, and we did not want to see that as an opportunity that would come here in Chestermere."
The city claims that a full business plan is being developed to support long-term sustainability at the golf course. If golf becomes no longer viable, the city will continue to own the land.
Whether or not the purchase would impact property taxes is not known, but the city is expecting to provide an update once the due diligence process is complete.
