The Winnipeg Jets brought plenty of excitement to downtown Winnipeg during their playoff run last month, but that's not it.
Thanks to the Jets' dedicated fans, over $234,000 was raised during this season's Whiteout Street Parties to support the work of four downtown community organizations.
"We are regularly humbled by the support of our fans and the spirit of our community," said Mark Chipman, executive chairman, True North Sports + Entertainment. "Through United Way Winnipeg, proceeds from the Street Parties help pivotal downtown organizations make that spirit stronger and support their work toward a healthier city for everyone."
The popular Whiteout Street Parties began in 2019, with True North Sports + Entertainment hosting the events and directing half of all ticket proceeds to United Way Winnipeg to support initiatives addressing homelessness, addiction, and mental health.
There were seven Whiteout Street Parties this year, with 35,000 fans attending. Extra funds were also made from the seven sold-out Hargrave St. Market Party in the Plaza events, raising $234,890 overall.
Four organizations to receive funds
The four organizations that will be receiving the funds include, Downtown Community Safety Partnership (DCSP), which provides 24/7, non-emergency support, outreach, and intervention to individuals experiencing complex issues; N’Dinawemak-Our Relatives’ Place, an Indigenous-led resource offering 24/7 space for individuals experiencing homelessness; Okichidah Pimahtisiwin Kiskinawmatowin (OPK), which aims to nurture and support marginalized, at-risk Indigenous young adults and their families; and Kã Ni Kãnichihk-Velma’s House, a place of safety, comfort and connection for women aged 18 and older who need immediate safety.
"Jets fans are true believers in the best of Winnipeg. They show up for their city with unwavering support—through both the struggles and the successes," said United Way Winnipeg President & CEO Connie Walker. "This echoes the work of these tremendous community organizations, who are great champions for Winnipeggers every single day."
"It’s been a tsunami of need," said OPK Executive Director Sheryl Blacksmith. "Thank you so much for this amazing gift and how much it’s going to change lives in our community."
Since the parties started, over $546,000 has been raised for organizations supporting homelessness, addiction and mental health initiatives.
