Due to the overwhelming generosity of Manitobans, the Winnipeg Humane Society has had to put a pause on donations.

Last week, the Humane Society put out a call for a variety of items to help with their emergency pop-up shelter that is housing the pets of wildfire evacuees at the St. Norbert Community Centre.

Accommodating up to 60 animals in need of immediate refuge, the shelter offers basic veterinary services, safe housing, food and spaces for exercise. Families are welcome to visit their pets during specified hours to help maintain their bonds during this challenging time.

People came in droves to drop off donations, everything from watering cans to flat sheets, blankets and pet beds, so much so that they now need time to organize what they've received.

"We continue to be blown away by the support Manitoba has shown to the families and pets who have been affected by the wildfires. Thank you isn't enough."

As they work on sorting out the supplies, the WHS has asked that no one drop off donations until June 14.

More than 21,000 people have been evacuated due to out-of-control wildfires burning in Manitoba.
