The annual Okotoks Parade and Children's Festival is happening this weekend, but will the weather be nice?

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada Scientist Christy Climenhaga, we can expect some slightly unsettled conditions this weekend.

"That's going to be seen starting this afternoon, evening, the risk of some scattered thunderstorm activity across much of Southern Alberta," Climenhaga explains.

Climenhaga adds that while she can see some weather in the Okotoks area, it looks like severe weather should stay a little further east of town.

"But, something to keep in mind if you have plans outside this evening, good idea to have your weather notifications set on, so if there are any watches or warnings, you are aware of them as they come up."

On Saturday, there is a better chance of heavier rain happening further north in Alberta, but in the Okotoks area, Climenhaga says it looks like there may be some showery weather on and off throughout the day, especially throughout the afternoon.

"The morning's looking a little bit drier, but you could see some showery weather through your afternoon hours. Temperatures, fairly seasonal, looking at temperatures in the lower 20s, maybe a couple of degrees above seasonal," Climenhaga says. "There is the chance of some more scattered thunderstorm activity tomorrow in Alberta, but a little bit of a weaker dynamic."

Climenhaga says the storms on Saturday are not expected to be the same severity as today.

"But again, most of that action does look to stay a little further east of you."

While there have been Air Advisories due to the smoke recently, Climenhaga says the smoke levels on Saturday should be better, but she adds that by the end of the weekend, there is a slight chance more smoke could be rolling into Southern Alberta.

"Still pretty uncertain, but something to keep in the back of your mind that there is just a lot of smoke in northern Alberta, northern B.C., a lot of fires burning up there. So, we're going to have to see how the weekend goes."

Because of that, Climenhaga suggest that those who are more susceptible to the effects of poor air quality keep an eye on the Air Quality Health Index, especially towards the end of the weekend and the start of next week.

Sunday is expected to have similar conditions to Saturday, but Climenhaga says there may be steadier rain in Southern Alberta on Sunday than on Saturday.

"Just a little area of instability working its way through southern Alberta. So, we could see some more rainfall, maybe a little steadier into the evening hours, overnight into your Monday morning. But, otherwise, again, those seasonal temperatures are looking to stick around, you know, 21, 22 degrees, drying out a bit for Monday," Climenhaga says.
