A 36-year-old man is in custody after an hours-long standoff over the weekend.

Just after 5 a.m. on Saturday, officers were called to a home in the 100 block of Grove Street for the report of shots fired. Officers quickly learned the suspect had recently been in a dispute with the occupants of the home, and he had returned armed and shot at the house. No one was injured.

He ran from the scene and hid under the Disraeli Bridge near Sutherland, where police responding to the call found him. The suspect was asked to put down the gun, but did not follow orders, and the situation quickly transitioned into an armed and barricaded situation.

The Winnipeg Police Service quickly closed down the area, including the boat traffic and the Disraeli Bridge and its off-ramps.

The WPS incident command was set up, along with additional resources and over the next ten hours, officers communicated with the suspect.

The hot weather added to the situation, and police were able to pass water to the suspect while they continued to communicate and attempt to de-escalate and resolve the situation.

Just before 3:30 p.m., the Tactical Support Team were able to take the man into custody safely.

The 36-year-old man faces a long list of charges, including violating his parole.

He remains in custody.
