The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has finished its investigation into a dog bite that occurred during an arrest involving the Manitoba First Nations Police Service (MFNPS) earlier this year.

The incident happened on January 9, when MFNPS officers attempted to stop a vehicle connected to a previous case. The vehicle slid into a ditch and stopped, and a man fled on foot. A K9 unit tracked him to a house trailer where he was found hiding.

Police say the man threatened to shoot officers and displayed a weapon. While surrendering, he reportedly lunged toward officers with an object in his hand, at which point a police dog was deployed and bit him. He was later taken to Portage District General Hospital for treatment.

As the case involved an injury during an arrest, the IIU took over the investigation under the Police Services Act. One subject officer and two witness officers were identified, and the affected person was interviewed.

After reviewing all the evidence, the IIU has decided not to authorize charges. The investigation is now closed.

The full report will be released once the court proceedings against the man are complete.

The IIU first announced details of the incident on January 10.
