A young Saskatchewan man has been handed a sentence of 12 months’ probation, community service, fines, and a temporary driving ban after admitting to a series of dangerous driving offences — including fleeing from police and driving at speeds of up to 170 km/h while under the influence of alcohol.

Court heard the charges stemmed from several incidents on March 15th 2025, during which the young man was caught speeding, driving impaired, and operating an unregistered vehicle. He entered guilty pleas to multiple charges, including impaired driving and evading police.

The Crown emphasized the high speeds, disregard for public safety, and repeated poor decision-making involved. The defence outlined the man’s history of addiction and mental health struggles, noting he has completed a residential rehabilitation program and is continuing treatment.

While acknowledging the serious risk to the public, the judge opted for a sentence that balanced accountability with the man’s rehabilitation efforts.

As part of the sentence, the man must follow a number of strict probation conditions. These include:

  • A nightly curfew from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., with exceptions made only for verified work schedules;

  • A ban on alcohol, cannabis and non-prescribed drugs;

  • No visits to bars, liquor or cannabis stores;

  • Mandatory counselling and addictions treatment, including inpatient programming if directed;

  • Completion of 55 hours of community service, with a minimum of five hours per month;

  • Attendance in a 10-day educational program, with proof of completion submitted to the court;

  • And a six-month driving prohibition.

Fines totalling $2,783 were imposed for various offences, including a $1,000 fine on the impaired driving charge. The judge granted an extension for payment until June 30, 2026, noting that partial payment may allow the man to apply for a return of his licence at a later date.

“This is a serious matter — but no one was hurt, and that’s fortunate,” the judge told the man. “You’ve acknowledged your responsibility early and shown a willingness to change. I hope you continue down that path.”
