A man from Landis has been sentenced to nine months of probation after pleading guilty to breaking into a home and causing mischief during a heated confrontation last June.
Derek Reginald Hazelton admitted to kicking in the door of a woman’s home on June 12, 2024, following what the complainant described as a period of ongoing harassment and unwanted contact. According to facts presented in court, Hazelton had shown up at the residence late at night, demanding a response to messages and forcing the door open while the woman stood behind it.
The Crown initially sought a conditional sentence order, commonly known as house arrest, citing the seriousness of the offence. However, the judge opted for a probation order after reviewing Hazelton’s dated criminal history, his compliance over the past year, and his willingness to resolve the matter.
Hazelton told the court the incident was a result of a personal falling-out and called it a “mistake.” He also expressed frustration with the delays in resolving the case, noting he had tried to plead guilty during an earlier appearance but was advised to retain a lawyer.
The court imposed a nine-month probation order with several conditions: Hazelton must keep the peace, appear in court when required, abstain from alcohol and non-prescribed drugs, and participate in anger management and personal counselling if directed by his probation officer.
He must also provide a DNA sample. Other related charges were withdrawn.
Hazelton has lived in Landis for five years and works in both farming and construction.
