A 79-year-old man from Red Deer has died following a two-vehicle crash on Highway 12 west of Castor, Alta., on Wednesday.
Coronation RCMP responded to the scene of the serious collision just west of the town on June 11, prompting a closure of Highway 12 in both directions between Castor and Township Road 380.
In an update later that day, RCMP confirmed that a truck travelling eastbound on Highway 12 veered into the oncoming lane and collided with an SUV.
Emergency Medical Services pronounced the SUV’s driver dead at the scene. His passenger, a woman whose age and identity have not been released, and the male driver of the truck were both airlifted by STARS with serious injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
RCMP say the highway has since reopened and they are not releasing further details at this time.
“The thoughts of the Alberta RCMP are with the family and friends of the deceased,” police said in a statement.
