The Guy Weadick Pro Rodeo is returning this weekend.
According to the High River Ag Society Events Coordinator, Liz Ellwood, they have several new events as part of the rodeo this year.
"I think the Tough Enough to Wear Pink on Saturday is going to be awesome," Ellwood explains. "So, raising those funds for the High River Community Cancer Center is going to be a lot of fun. And then, on the Sunday, we are having our inaugural Family Day."
On Saturday night, they will host a cabaret that will start as soon as the bulls stop bucking around 9 p.m., and admission is covered by the ticket to the rodeo.
The Greg Vardy Band will be performing at the cabaret.
Sunday morning, they will have a Cowboy Church and a free pancake breakfast, sponsored by Ridgeline Electrical Services.
As part of the Family Day, from 1 o'clock in the afternoon, they are going to have bounce houses, a petting zoo, a twist and text cowboy who will be making balloon animals.
Admission to the Family Day event is covered by the rodeo ticket and is sponsored by the High River Dental Center.
"So, that area opens at 1 o'clock and then the performance starts at 2 o'clock on Sunday."
Also on Sunday, they will be hosting a Golden Circle of Champions, which helps to raise awareness and funds to help children battling pediatric cancer.
"This is the first year that we're bringing this concept to our rodeo," Ellwood explains.
As part of this event, they have a special VIP who is battling leukemia who will have a day to remember.
"She's going to meet a cowboy, she's going to hang out backstage, she's going to do all the cool things that a little cowgirl would want to do," Ellwood says. "I've got Miss Rodeo Stavely, who's going to be escorting her all day, and we're hoping to raise funds to really establish us as one of these Golden Circle of Champions rodeos to help as many children as we can who are battling these horrible cancers."
On top of that, there will also be food trucks and vendors on-site all three days of the rodeo.
For rodeo activities, there will be a wild pony race happening on Saturday, and on Sunday, there will be mutton busting as part of family day.
They will have an opening ceremony and prayer to start the rodeo, and then the rodeo action begins.
There will be bareback bronc riding, ladies barrel racing, tie down roping, team roping, saddle bronc, steer wrestling, breakaway roping, and bull riding.
"And then, Bella Da Costa is a trick rider. She's with us every day for all of the performances. And we also have Miss Rodeo Canada with us on Friday and Saturday as well." Ellwood says.
For those who live in Calgary and want to go to the rodeo, but don't wish to drive, you're in luck.
There is a free bus that will run from Ranchman's on Saturday night, so people can hop the bus leaving Ranchman's at 5 p.m., watch the rodeo, enjoy the cabaret, then take the bus back to Ranchman's at 11 p.m., free of charge.
The rodeo begins at 6:30 on Friday and Saturday, but on Sunday, the rodeo begins at 2 p.m.
