Saskatchewan’s 2025 tornado season is off to a quieter but active start, with three of the first five confirmed twisters touching down in West Central Saskatchewan — including the province’s first two of the year.
According to the Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP), weak tornadoes were confirmed near Cut Knife, Coleville and Hepburn between June 2 and June 14. All three have been assigned preliminary EF0 ratings, the weakest on the Enhanced Fujita scale, with no damage reported.
The first and second tornadoes of the season formed within minutes of each other near Cut Knife on June 2. Both were classified as landspout tornadoes — generally weak and short-lived twisters that develop from surface-based convergence.
The first touched down at approximately 3:30 p.m., with a second twister forming five minutes later nearby. Video footage of both events was provided by local storm chaser Aaron Rutley of @sasktwisterhunters. No injuries or structural damage were reported, and satellite imagery is still being reviewed.
West Central Saskatchewan saw another brief tornado on June 13 near Coleville, southeast of Kindersley. The NTP says the tornado was observed and photographed south of town around 6:00 p.m., though again, no damage was reported or detected. It was rated EF0-Default due to the absence of impact indicators.
Just a day later, on June 14, another EF0-Default tornado touched down near Hepburn, north of Saskatoon. Witnesses captured video and photos of the funnel cloud shortly after 3:40 p.m. Like the others, no injuries or damage have been reported.
With all five of Saskatchewan’s confirmed tornadoes so far in 2025 rated EF0 and none resulting in damage, storm trackers and emergency officials continue to monitor weather patterns closely as summer storm season ramps up.
