Delmer Nott has been elected as one of two new directors representing the Interlake region on the Association of Manitoba Municipalities (AMM) board, following a vote held at the Oak Point Community Hall on June 11.
Nott says he was honoured to be nominated by his council and took the campaign seriously by reaching out to municipalities across the region. He ran on the belief that rural communities deserve a stronger voice at the table, and that motivated him to connect directly with voters in all 20 Interlake municipalities.
“I put forward my thoughts of going to every municipality in the region to ensure that they knew who I was and that I was committed to being their representative,” notes Nott.
He says the goal of his campaign was to bring attention to the pressing issues that rural areas face, including inadequate funding and unequal access to essential services.
“Rural areas are having a very difficult time with funding and with providing their residents with the needs that other urban areas maybe take for granted,” adds Nott.
Now part of the AMM board, Nott believes the new leadership team, including both returning and new members, shares a unified vision. He says the board recognizes an important aspect of rural Manitoba.
“Rural areas and rural Manitoba need to be considered the same as other areas,” continues Nott. “And they have the same needs and wants.”
