Residents at Eatonia Oasis Living (EOL) recently picked up their paintbrushes for a special art session inspired by one of Saskatchewan’s most iconic blooms, the Prairie lily.
The class was led by local artist and Vancouver-based art student Rylan Cocks, whose grandmother lives at EOL. Cocks said the idea for the session came from a personal place.
“This time around, we did the lily painting, and I chose that because tiger lilies are my grandma’s favourite flower,” said Cocks. “She always had them outside her house in Leader, and now she has them outside her room at EOL. It’s always nice going there and getting to be a part of what makes EOL so great.”
Cocks, who runs Make Space Art Studio in Leader, makes a point of returning to EOL for painting classes whenever he’s home.
“I really love going there and being a part of this,” he said. “They’re always super grateful and very kind, and it’s really nice to give back to a place that’s so great with my grandma.”
The colourful artworks created by residents now decorate their rooms — a personal piece of joy that adds warmth and pride to their living space.
“They all say they’re terrible artists, but the paintings turn out wonderful,” said Brandi Machan, an administrative assistant at EOL. “It’s something different, and they really enjoy it.”
Machan noted that activities like this are about more than just painting.
“They play an important role in supporting residents’ mental and emotional well-being,” she said. “It’s a creative outlet and a chance to connect socially.”
Anyone interested in organizing a similar activity is encouraged to contact EOL.
“Just give us a call at 306-967-2447 and talk to someone in the office, or connect with Barb, our activity director,” Machan said. “Our residents love trying new things.”
More photos and updates from the art class were shared on the Eatonia Oasis Living Facebook page, with staff thanking Cox for what has become a favourite visit: “They turned out great, looking forward to the next one!”
