John Braun of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away peacefully on Monday, June 16th in St. Boniface Hospital. John was the firstborn child of John L. and Anna Braun and was raised on a farm near Plum Coulee, Manitoba. At age 10, the family bought a farm five miles north of Plum Coulee. John did many farm chores and took an interest in carpentry, building a new chicken coop and helping his uncle Dietrich build an addition to his parents’ home. At the age of 21, he built a new barn on the farm with his brother Isaac.
At 22, John moved to Winnipeg, where he took a carpentry job with Dyck Brothers. In 1956, he met Louise Martin. They dated for a year and were married on June 2, 1957, at the Bergthaler Church in Plum Coulee. John and Louise began their married life in Winnipeg and soon after built their first home on Hudson Street. John was a very hard worker and enjoyed his job, so he enrolled in the provincial Carpentry Apprenticeship Program and received his Journeyman Certification on April 21, 1966.
In January 1962, they started their family when they adopted their daughter Brenda, and three years later adopted their son Bradley. In 1968, they had another son, Bentley, and their youngest son, Kevin, was born in 1971. By this time, they had moved to Springstein, Manitoba where they raised their children for the next 17 years. John built and renovated homes, worked on a wide variety of construction projects, and found joy in his work. He also enjoyed yard work and helping Louise in the garden.
John’s faith in Christ was the foundation of his life and shaped who he was and how he approached every aspect of life. The family attended Charleswood Temple Church, where John taught Sunday School and served on the Board.
In 1991, John and Louise moved to Swan River, where they worked together until retirement. After retiring, they built a new home at Manhattan Beach Retreat Centre at Pelican Lake. A few years later, they moved back to Winnipeg to be closer to family. There, John continued to enjoy woodworking projects, building furniture, and helping his children with various home construction and home renovations.
John and Louise were both very hospitable and enjoyed an active social life. John made friends wherever he went and loved spending time with others. He was warm, genuine, and friendly to everyone.
John was a very loving husband and took great care of Louise as her health deteriorated due to Alzheimer’s disease. He was incredibly faithful, patient, and caring through all the difficult challenges. On June 2, 2017, they were able to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary in Louise’s care home with many friends and family.
John was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Louise (nee Martin) in April 2020; he is survived by four children Brenda (Tom Hiebert), Brad (Angie) Braun, Bentley (Helen) Braun, Kevin (Jane) Braun; his 10 grandchildren, Matthew Hiebert (Brianne Curtis), Mark Hiebert, Tyler Hiebert (Kylie Thiessen), Brandyn Funk (Teraleigh Prevost), Travis Meredith (Sahar Wiebe-Meredith), Candice Coulas (Ian Coulas), Taylor (Nathan Friesen), Rebecca (Ray Davill), Emily Braun, Tyson Braun; eight great-grandchildren, Charleigh Braun, Natalie Comeau, Erica Coulas, Nikki Thiessen, Jacob Thiessen-Hiebert, Iydin Wiebe-Meredith; and one great-great grandchild, Elias Mandrake.
