Midland MLA Lauren Stone is renewing her push for the Manitoba government to address worsening conditions at Elm Creek School’s gymnasium.

Stone says the situation has not improved since she first raised the issue in the Legislature, and she’s frustrated by the lack of response.

Still no answer from province

Despite petitions and public concern, Stone says the provincial government has yet to respond to requests for help.

“We still haven’t received a response from the minister responsible,” she notes. “There’s quite a number of petitions that are out there in the community right now, both to the provincial government as well as to the school division itself.”

Stone says she remains committed to pushing for a solution and plans to bring the issue forward again when the legislature returns in the fall.

Ongoing safety concerns for students

Stone says she has visited the gym and is alarmed by what she saw.

“I’ve been in that gym. It is dangerous. It has heaving floors, there’s mould, there’s leaking,” she remarks. “It is certainly not a safe space for students to partake in physical education.”

She adds that the space remains the only gym option for Elm Creek students, and if it becomes unusable, it could severely impact their physical education.

“It’s something that I’d like to see get done and a solution be provided,” Stone continues. “I’ll continue to press the minister and the government on that issue.”
