A new traffic signal at Towerlane and Elk Hill is expected to be operational by June 25, the City of Airdrie said in a June 20 news release.
The upgrade is meant to enhance safety, improve traffic flow and prepare for the opening of Inspire. No further details about Inspire were provided.
A full reconstruction of Main Street between Elk Hill and Erin Drive is scheduled to begin in early July. The project includes full asphalt removal, intersection upgrades, and improved pedestrian access, including wheelchair-friendly enhancements at Elk Hill. The work will follow a phased approach.
“The previous Main Street construction north of Elk Hill was related to upgrades and life-cycle replacements of water, sanitary and stormwater pipes,” said Mayor Peter Brown. “This roadway reconstruction work is from Elk Hill south to Erin Drive and is to rehabilitate the roadway structure following a geotechnical evaluation completed in 2024.”
Once the new signal is activated, the City will remove the mid-block pedestrian crossing near ATB and restore curbs and landscaping in the area.
The City said the area will remain safe and accessible for pedestrians while the upgrades are underway.
One lane in each direction will remain open throughout the project. Turning delays are expected during the work. Some access restrictions and detours will affect churches and nearby neighbourhoods.
