A Winnipeg track star who died in a car crash two years ago has had his legacy live on, not only as a record-holding athlete, but as a hero who saved seven lives.
On March 1, 2023, Kirk Cadman, a student at Dakota Collegiate and Lavallee School, was tragically killed in a car accident.
Thanks to organ donation, Cadman saved seven lives, including one who received his heart.
"His selflessness and courage have made him a hero," said the Louis Riel School Division. "His perseverance and determination were most evident when he overcame a dislocated knee, an injury doctors believed would end his running career."
Cadman holds the provincial record in the 400m hurdles and was part of the record-holding 4x400m relay team. After suffering his injury, Cadman quickly transitioned into something new, becoming one of the top five racewalkers in Canada in the U18 section.
After healing from his injury, Cadman returned to running, winning two provincial records.
To honour his memory, Athletics Manitoba has established the Kirk Cadman Memorial Classic, a track and field event celebrating his lasting legacy.
The event will take place on July 6, 2025, with a ceremonial 400m walk at 1:45 p.m.
"We encourage everyone to come down to the track from the stands and participate in this walk in Kirk's honour."
