Summer officially arrived at 8:42 p.m. Friday, but it wasn’t sunshine that kicked off the warmest season. Instead, parts of Saskatchewan received substantial rainfall over the weekend as a system moved into the province from Alberta, where some communities received over 100 millimetres of rain. What was seen in Saskatchewan wasn’t quite as much, but it was enough to prompt the cancellation or postponement of sports and other events throughout the weekend.

Environment and Climate Change Canada reported Weyburn received 27.3 mm of rain from early Saturday morning to 2 a.m. Monday morning. Most of the rain fell on Sunday, with 15.6 mm reported.

A number of other communities in the province received substantial rainfall as well. It was reported that 25.8 mm fell in Coronach, 23.8 mm in Regina, 27.2 mm in Saskatoon, and 33.3 mm in Kindersley. However, not everywhere received the rainfall.

Estevan, just down Highway 39 from Weyburn, received just 9.8 mm over the weekend, and Swift Current 11.7 mm.

With the system that brought the rain moving on, temperatures are expected to warm up in the coming days. Environment Canada is calling for temperatures to get back into the mid-20s by the middle of the week and continuing through into the weekend.
