Wesley Huber has been named Volunteer of the Month by the City of Portage la Prairie, recognized for stepping up as coach of the PCI Trojans hockey team when no one else would.
“It is unexpected for sure, but you know it’s a great honor for to be recognized in anything,” Huber says. “That was great to be recognized.”
Jumping in to save the team from folding
Huber got involved because the team was at risk of folding due to the absence of a coach.
“My son played last year, and then this year they were looking for a coach. Nobody was going to step up to coach or they said they were going to fold the team. I just jumped in there and volunteered to coach the team for the year,” he adds.
Reflecting on the season
Looking back, Huber remarks, “It was a very fun year. Kids had a lot of fun, they learned a lot, they developed a lot. We ended up in a good situation.”
As for next season, Huber says, “My one son has graduated this year, so we’ll see. You never know what happens.”
Huber emphasizes the value of community involvement.
“If people don’t step up, then some activities will no longer be available like the hockey team or whatever it may be. If people aren’t there to volunteer their time to coach to help the kids or whatever it takes, things will disappear from Portage.”
The City of Portage la Prairie thanks Huber for his dedication and the positive impact he continues to have on local youth.
