The Manitoba government has officially lifted the province-wide state of emergency declared in response to this spring’s wildfire crisis, citing improved conditions and the work of front-line responders.

Premier Wab Kinew and Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Lisa Naylor, Minister responsible for the Emergency Management Organization, announced today, noting that while the overall risk has eased, some local evacuations remain in effect.

“The decision to lift the state of emergency reflects the progress made on the ground and the dedication of the firefighting teams,” says Kinew. “As a government, we acted when we needed to, and now we’re stepping back at the right time. This is still a serious situation, so we will remain vigilant and prepare for any changes, but this marks a positive step for Manitoba.”

The state of emergency, first declared on May 28th, officially expired at noon today.

Many residents have started returning home, but evacuation orders issued by local authorities remain in place where necessary until it is safe to re-enter those areas.

Naylor acknowledged the continued efforts of all those involved in emergency response throughout the wildfire season.

“I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the front-line responders, the Emergency Management Organization, and government departments for their continued efforts during this wildfire crisis,” Naylor says. “Their coordination, dedication, and tireless work have been instrumental in protecting lives, property, and communities across Manitoba, and I know that they continue to work to keep Manitobans safe.”

The province is reminding Manitobans that, though the state of emergency is over, the wildfire threat continues. For current updates on active wildfires, fire bans, and evacuation information, visit the provincial wildfire website.
