The Weyburn Therapeutic Animal Park (WTAP) has been busy since their opening day on June 7th. Hosting a flock of new and interesting animals, including ducks, alpacas, bunnies, ponies, and more; the fun never stops at the park.
That fun is going to continue into July as they’re partnering with the Weyburn Youth Centre for a Glow Dance Fundraiser on July 19th. Janay Kistanov, president and communications manager at WTAP, talks about the intriguing new fundraiser.
“We're having a glow dance on Saturday, July 19th for grades 5 to 12. It's a great way for kids to come out, socialize, and have some fun during the summer. We're going to have some glow sticks and some black lights, and a DJ. We have DJ Bailey Roy coming.”
Alongside the chemiluminescence and the dancing, there will be a barbeque selling hot dogs, hamburgers, cotton candy, lemonade, snacks and drinks. Hosted at the Weyburn Youth Centre (WYC) at 310 Coteau Ave, the cost is $5 at the door with funds from the night going to both WTAP and the Youth Centre. Kistanov explains the inspiration behind the fundraiser and how the funds are allocated.
“So, one of our board members, Amanda (Wegner), she wanted to do something different and give an opportunity for the kids to do something during the summer. So primarily all of our donations first and foremost go towards the animals, their feed, anything they need and then any excess that we have, we're looking towards future projects.”
The animal park has had a wonderful start to the season, welcoming in some new animals including a new pony named Snickerdoodle, and has had great turnouts for volunteers who’ve dedicated time to making the park as best as it can be and Kistanov says there will be orientation shifts coming up shortly for those interested in volunteering.
