Canadian flags were handed out to Strathmore residents in preparation for Canada Day.
Several volunteers handed out 200 flags outside of the Strathmore Legion on Thursday (June 26) from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to honour Canadian veterans.
People passing by could accept a flag, and cars also stopping at the intersection received them.
The legion was also accepting food donations for veterans. This annual event has been running for over four years.
"We haven't seen a lot of flags out yet. We wanted to do it earlier, so people have enough time to display them over the weekend," said Debbie Mitzner, one of the volunteers.
"The celebration down at the lake is really good. The fire hall's pancake breakfast--my daughter, Melissa Matheson, is singing there for Canada Day," Mitzner added.
She also revealed another detail as to why Canada Day is a double celebration for her.
"My grandson is a Canada Day baby, so we have a birthday for him every Canada Day," Mitzner reminisced. "He just feels he gets fireworks every year for his birthday, but it's Canada Day."
She also plans to run again for town council.
The legion plans to have the sidewalk become a veterans' mural to mark its 100-year anniversary later in the summer.
