The first Taste of Summer Charity BBQ is coming up quickly, "roasting" of great food, and great causes.

The weekly fundraiser kicks off July 2 at 11 a.m. in front of Steinbach Credit Union (SCU), with proceeds from the first event going to Island Breeze, a local charity based just outside Steinbach.

"We're going on 16 years, and we think two things that people know us for is that we run discipleship training schools, and we have an entertainment component," says Isi Masi with Island Breeze.

One of the organization's key programs is a sports initiative that has seen strong community interest.

"We didn't know it was a need in the community. Especially the volleyball, like having 72 girls last year. Rugby is slowly picking up again," Masi says.

He says he is thankful the Youth With A Mission (YWAM) program is surrounded by a giving community, and to be partaking in Taste of Summer once again.

This year, the money raised through the event will go towards hosting a week-long international conference in Canada for the first time, he says.

"We will have locations from New Zealand, South Africa... Hawaii, and they're all coming to Steinbach," Masi explains. "This will tremendously help us run that week."

The Taste of Summer Charity BBQ will return every Wednesday in front of the SCU from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., with each event supporting a different charity.

A minimum donation of $2 is required, and all donations will go directly to the featured charity of the week.
